Project: Development and implementation of Quality management system according to ISO standards
The project aim was to implement the Quality Management System (QMS) for JSC “Tajik Catering Service,” a leading company in the Tajik aviation market in the delivery and preparation of on-board meals. After doing business with many EU countries for several years, top managers at Tajik Catering Service decided to implement the same ISO standards of their clientele after initial difficulties accessing markets in France, Turkey and Spain, as clients were requesting from the company the implementation and certification of Quality Management System in accordance to ISO 9001.
Tajik Catering Service contacted consultants at Kamolot-1 who are specialists in the implementation of a Quality Management Systems according to international ISO standards. The local expertise and extensive knowledge of the Tajik food industry made them stand out as the most professional, most efficient, and most cost-effective consulting firm for the job.
Consultants at Kamolot-1 have been doing business with firms in Tajikistan since 2007. The International Trade Centre (UNCTAD / WTO) selected them as a long-term partner in the sphere of improving the quality infrastructure. Specialists at Kamolot-1 focus on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) in addition to QMS.
After identifying key business processes at Tajik Catering Service, consultants at Kamolot-1 formed a documentation pyramid on the business processes of the QMS. Consultants also conducted an internal audit in which they found ways to improve the company’s compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001. After corrective measures were taken and efficiency and effectiveness of processes thoroughly analyzed, QMS was successfully implemented at Tajik Catering Service.
After the project was completed the Norwegian certification body DNV certified Kamolot-1 specifically for their expertise in ISO 9001. Kamolot-1’s extensive experience and cooperation with international consultants shows that, despite the different levels of economic development in each country of operation, truly professional consultants speak the same language and understand each other’s goals. 2nd Place - Consulting Project of the Year
Good Solutions, Kazakhstan
Project: Bringing Caspian Beverage Holdings to the #1 position in the Almaty CSD market.
Consultants at Good Solutions were approached by Caspian Beverage holdings to re-brand and re-position its top-selling product, the ‘Buratino’ (the Russian name for Pinocchio) Lemonade, so that it ranked as the number one soft drink sold in Kazakhstan. Buratino wished to regain its status as the most popular soft drink in Kazakhstan after losing out to foreign brands such as Pepsi and Coca Cola, and constantly competing with local imitators.
Caspian Beverage Holdings asked Good Solutions to conduct consumer research to find the pros and cons of the brand. Their findings would aid the development of a final marketing strategy. Their goals were simple: differentiate CBH’s Buratino from local competitors in the lemonade segment and build the brand image to compete with multinational brands like Coca Cola and Pepsi.
Good Solutions responded with an image campaign advertising “Настоящий Буратино. Самозванцев много, настоящий один” (The Original Pinocchio. Many pretenders, but only one original) and “Настоящий Буратино. Эксперты советуют” (The Original Pinocchio. Experts recommend it!) They also found that the brand’s nostalgia factor was also an important tool in finding their market’s key segments, as well as finding new target segments in children aged 4-12 years old with the brand’s child friendly mascot.
The use of shelf price parity with Coke and Pepsi, restyling of packaging and materials to make it feel like a multinational brand, use of consumer promos, and heavy advertising also was incorporated into Good Solution’s new marketing strategy.
The results were impressive, the new image campaign and re-branding led to Buratino regaining leadership, with over 70% market share in Almaty. By August 2011, Buratino was the number one CSD beverage in Almaty, a 2% market share edge of Coca Cola and Pepsi.

PREKO Consulting was established in 2002 as a consulting firm specializing mainly in marketing research, feasibility studies, marketing planning, branding, sales optimization and development, strategic planning, organizational structuration, and motivation systems development. With 10 full-time employees and 30 independent consultants, PREKO’s expertise in the Kostanay region of Kazakhstan has earned them both distinctions as consultants of the year and for their work on various consulting projects.
Mr. Rakhmetov was announced to become Consultant of the Year during the first ever Gabriel Al-Salem International Conference “Consulting Without Borders”. This award gives consultants like him the opportunity to be evaluated by professionals and experts in the sphere of consulting. There exist no special standards or requirements for consultants in the region, so the opinion of professionals with a specially developed number of criteria helps increase excellence in the profession each day.
Main challenges encountered by Preko an Mr. Rackmetov include confronting the negative attitudes towards regional consultants as opposed to “big city” consultants. However, PREKO Consulting consistently proved that local expertise is highly valuable. It keeps demonstrating that consultants from smaller cities are not necessarily consultants with limited capabilities. If a client does business on a regional level, the quality and accessibility of PREKO’s services exceed services by companies in larger, metropolitan areas.
Talgat and his colleagues intend to continue succeeding. In 2011, they have already expanded their services geographically inside the Kostanay region, as well as to Shymkent, Astana, Kentau, Aktobe, and Kyzyl-Orda.

2nd Place - Consultant of the Year and Honorable Mention For Public Service in Promoting Consulting
Pro-Consulting was created in 2004 to address the needs of growing market in Ukraine looking for consulting services in analytics and marketing research, business planning, business valuation, analysis of financial statement, the identification of market trends, and preparation of investment programs.
Pro-Consulting’s winning project is the result of the creation of an integral property complex for the agribusiness Berest that specializes in the production of high quality agricultural products (flour and cereals products, pork), including the cultivation of its raw material base and the processing and sale of agricultural products to its consumers. Pro-Consulting worked with top managers in the development of sales markets and strengthening the firm’s position in the market of flour and cereals products and pork.
The project’s goal was to attract the necessary financial resources (investors) to conduct an analysis of competitive situation and plan the company’s activities. Thus, the Enterprise «AGROPROMFIRMA» was created in 2010 especially for the development of a modern production agricultural complex comprising of: an industrial elevator with the capacity of 20 thousand tons grain a flour mill with the capacity of 150 tons raw materials per day, a hog farm for 3000 animals, and a Biogas unit for production of energy required for maintenance of production facilities.
In addition to commercial work, Pro-Consulting also runs a specialized conference as well as TV series on how to attract financing, thus, promoting consulting in Ukraine.
Pro-Consulting’s success has led the International Award Committee to select them as Consultant of the Year as well honoring their commitment to public service and promotion of the field of consulting in Ukraine.

Since 2000, M-Vector LLC has managed to expand its operations all over the Central Asian region. M-Vector has regional branches in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Besides these countries, they also have experience in providing their clients with services in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Mongolia and Bangladesh.
Annually, M-Vector conducts around 70 projects all over the Central Asia, including around 10 multi-country and cross-border projects, which promote friendship between the countries and experts working in those countries.

Dmitriy Alaudinov, DQS-UL Group, Uzbekistan
Mr. Alaudinov's main consultancy activities include the implementation and assessment of management systems based on international standards like ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000, OHSAS 18001, ISO/TS 16949, GMP etc. Although it was initially difficult to implement these specific standards in Uzbekistan, thanks to his contribution to the field, there are now 600 companies that implemented quality management systems based on ISO 9001 standard. Mr. Alaudinov is one of the very first consultants in Uzbekistan to have started and developed this trend.
In 2004, Mr. Alaudinov conducted his first seminar regarding ISO 9001 and evaluation audits for the company PanAlpina in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Shortly afterwards in 2005, he conducted 30 different trainings for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and so on with over 200 participants in neighboring Kazakhstan. In 2008, he started first consulting project in Tajikistan for the company Vavilon, and in 2011 worked to implement ISO 9001 standards for the firm Shazada in Turkmenistan.
Thanks to his work, these firms across Central Asia have improved the quality of management inside the company, have received international recognition and opportunities to export their goods to international markets, have been able to participate in international tenders, increase the quality of products, and reduce inefficiencies and errors in production.
When 10 years ago when Mr. Alaudinov started working in consulting, many of his colleagues believed that his work was of little use for the market in Central Asia. Now his achievements as a quality consultant have earned him the recognition of the International Award Committee at the Gabriel Al-Salem Foundation.

Special Recognition for Significant Contribution to the Developing the Field of Consulting in Central Asia
Drumm McNaughton, USA
When Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan were in the early stages of developing their consulting profession, they needed help to start recognizing some of their members through the award of the CMC or Certified Management Consultant designation. A number of countries were approached including the United States who gladly agreed to recognize the candidates. Twelve professionals from Central Asia were among the first to be recognized as having achieved the certification requirements for the CMC when they attended the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes annual meeting in Jordan in 2010.
Making this certification happen was no small achievement; Gabriel himself was instrumental in bringing many of the players together including EBRD who supported the candidates traveling to Jordan. Also, the Institute of Management Consulting in the US provided its blessing for a cost effective approach that would allow the candidates to meet the CMC requirements. In all of this we owe a debt of gratitude and thanks especially to one individual who coordinated these efforts and brought the dream of certification to reality to some of the first CMC’s in Central Asia.
That individual is Drumm McNaughton, past Chair of the Institute of Management Consulting USA. After the certification in Jordan, Drumm went over and above the normal expectations to support the new CMCs through online discussions, hands on advice, access to the IMC USA training materials and a lot more. When the tragedy happened, and Gabriel was no longer around to support the consultants, Drumm whole-heartedly offered his professional help and guidance, especially to CMC Kazakhstan, the organization that was formed three days after Gabriel’s death.
He truly stands out as a special person that we would like to recognize for all his efforts in contributing towards building the management consulting profession in Central Asia.
