Swiss Regional Cooperation Strategy for Central Asia, 2007-2011
Swiss Cooperation with Central Asia supports the Central Asian countries in implementing their national development strategies and, by working in collaboration with other donors, aims to achieve sustainable development through poverty alleviation, growth of private entrepreneurship, ensuring equal access to quality public services and, in general, building of democratic and economically viable states. The approach “think regionally, act locally” is used in the strategic planning of technical and financial cooperation, i.e., the projects are designed by taking into account specific needs and national strategies of each country.

Over the last 16 years Switzerland provided more than 200 million USD to Kyrgyzstan in the form of technical, financial and humanitarian support in such areas as:

  • Heath care reform;
  • Water management and disaster risk reduction;
  • Basic infrastructure (water and energy);
  • Private sector development;
  • Public institutions and services.

Crosscutting themes – gender and governance - are understood as an additional dimension to development operations with the aim of enhancing program effectiveness and relevance.

Swiss Cooperation Offices also work in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The Swiss Embassy for Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan works from Tashkent.
